February 28, 2013 - An inductee to the Nova Scotia Business Hall Of Fame!
HALIFAX— The Junior Achievement Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame announces today that Stephen Smith, owner of the Central Group of Companies, is a member of its 2013 inductee class.
Stephen Smith’s journey to success began in 1976, when he and his brother Dan started selling wood stoves out of their parent’s garage. Just two years later, S&D Central Supplies Limited was incorporated.
Since then, the Central Group of Companies has grown into a significant corporate entity, creating secure employment for more than 650 Nova Scotians and New Brunswickers. What began as an entrepreneur’s dream, grew to be one of the largest building supply companies east of Montreal. Under Steve’s leadership and motivation, the organization has grown to include associate companies including Atlantic Window Co. and Nova Truss.
Under Steve’s philosophy of providing excellence in customer satisfaction throughout all of the Central Group of companies, he and his businesses have received the title of 'Business of the Year' from the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce and the Antigonish Chamber of Commerce. In 2010, Atlantic Windows was winner of the Crystal Achievement Award for the Most Innovative Plant in North America. Most recently in 2012, Central was awarded Best Large Surface Retailer in Canada at the Outstanding Retailer Awards hosted by Hardware Merchandising Magazine in Toronto, ON.
Steve is well known for his business acumen, entrepreneurial spirit, and his unwavering support for his community and province. Steve has been recognized for his philanthropy with two awards from the Professional Fundraisers of Nova Scotia - one in 1987 for Central Group of Companies as Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist, and another in 2005 as Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser.
Steve refuses to think small, and continuously gives back generously to the province he calls home, making him a role model for future generations of business leaders and associates. It is because of these outstanding personal traits and business accomplishments that in 2010, Steve was recognized by St. Francis Xavier University with an Honourary Doctor of Laws Degree.
In recognition of his achievements, Stephen Smith will be inducted during the 2013 Junior Achievement Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame gala, which takes place on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at the World Trade & Convention Centre, Halifax.
The Junior Achievement Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame, presented by Colour, is the province's premier business networking event as it recognizes the accomplishments of business leaders in Nova Scotia. Funds raised at the event support Junior Achievement educational programs, which focus on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work readiness for students from Grade 6 to high school.
January 2013 - ILDC Names New President!
We are proud to announce Central's owner Steve Smith has been recently elected President of ILDC.
The Independent Lumber Dealers Co-operative was founded in 1964, and is one of Canada's leading buying cooperatives. It is comprised of 20 of Canada's largest independent home improvement organizations with a total of 1,000 plus outlets from coast to coast, with sales in excess of $3 billion, and growing. Each member organization competes for business under its own name.
The combined volumes of its members provide the vendor with a major home improvement player, with a variety of stores from coast to coast, which include big boxes, traditional home improvement stores, and contractor yards and GSD, in both urban and rural markets.
November 2012 - Best Large Surface Retailer in Canada!
Central Stellarton is Hardware Merchandising’s 2012 Outstanding Retailer Award (ORA) winner in the category of Large Surface Retailer.
The store received near-perfect marks from the judges for the overall appearance of the store; its detailed, multi-faceted marketing plan which includes flyers, radio, TV, signage, electronic and social media; it’s support of more than 150 area organizations; and the diversity of its business extensions. It was, says one judge, “the best submission by far” in its category.
The Outstanding Retailer Awards, launched in 1992, were created to honour excellence and innovation in hardware and home improvement retailing. Gala dinner master of ceremonies Steve Dempsey said, "Central not only met the judges' criteria, it exceeded them. "Without question, it is one of the industry's best."
Central owner Steve Smith says, "This is wonderful recognition and is indicative of the exceptional teamwork between our Retail Support Center, Distribution Center and Store Associates in delivering our Customer Promise at every Central location. We are especially proud of our Stellarton team for winning this well-deserved Outstanding Retailer Award."
